Just last week I was having a discussion with a fellow nutrition coach and she was terribly frustrated because she couldn’t get her clients to just buy whole milk yogurt. Not even to eat once a week, they were terrified because of 30yrs of low fat indoctrination. Somewhere along the line the ubiquitous “they” got into her head that heart disease was caused by fat. All fat, no matter the source. So “they” said hey there, you, American consumer, stop eating fat, it’ll kill you.
Unfortunately, when you take fat from food, it doesn’t taste amazing. So they “fixed it” by adding extra sugar to sweet things and extra salt and msg to salty things. Fast forward to now…guess what we still have, heart disease, despite more of us eating low fat options. In fact, it’s higher than ever before and now we also have more diet related diabetes. Guess what else we have more of…Alzheimer’s. You know what the experts are saying is the cause in increase of Alzheimer’s diets low in good fats and high sugars :-/ Irony, thy name is low fat diet. But what about the studies?! Well, funny thing about that study (singular), it was never able to be duplicated but unfortunately the damage had been done. The myth became legend and the legend became fact.
Really, what a good diet really consists of is balance. Not what’s balanced for me or your neighbor that just lost 20lbs drinking cabbage soup (ps and by the way, that’s a horrible idea) or that girl at work who only eats red things. I’m talking bio individual diet plans. Eat what makes sense for you. 3 balanced meals? Go for it. Grazing 6 times a day? Go for it. Meatless Monday? Go for it. What I don’t think is good for you, is most of the packaged foods market. If you can’t pronounce it, you shouldn’t eat it. Period. Have fresh or frozen veg (not those that come in a sauce, make your own) Have healthy portions of meat when you crave it. (As big as your palm) Have fresh fruit. (Especially those in the berry family) Have good fats, (coconut oil, olive oil, real and actual butter) have more meals prepared at home and last but not least… eat enough! I can’t tell you how many obese people have said to me but I only eat dinner! I could write a whole book on what fails in your body when you do that. If you want better health and better skin…eat clean unpackaged foods low in sugar.
